At first glance, I noticed that the existing site offered a wide variety of rugs, with a lot of customization options. However, the interaction flows were not streamlined and the overall experience was not optimized. In addition, the mobile version of the site was also hard to use and needed a redesign.

target audience
After reviewing the different functions of the site and talking to the team, I was able to deduce two primary personas that were targeted. The Perfect Rug focused on people that were buying rugs for their home. They were interested in highly customizable rugs that would fit their needs. The site also targeted interior designers that were trying to discover and pick rugs for their clients. Both personas had to be considered as I was gearing up for the redesign.

outcome
I delivered the final design and got very positive feedback from the client. The redesigned site is now live and helping customers find great custom rugs for their homes! Below is some of the comments that I received for my work on The Perfect Rug.
Our ecommerce site is particularly complex due to the amount of customization users can do. Raden made the interface clean, simple, and intuitive. And he managed to fit a wealth of information for each product and its customizations onto mobile-sized screens. Plus he gave us a modern-looking design that we desperately needed. He was thoughtful, collaborative, and skilled.

personas
Shopper Sarah
Sarah is a shopper that wants to buy a nice rug for her new home. She is looking for a custom-sized rug for her living room space that can fit well with her decor. She needs an easy way to search and compare rugs, as well as find great tips and inspiration.
Designer Dana
Dana is an interior designer. She searches for rugs for her clients. Her goal is to find new patterns and styles that match with her design aesthetic. She needs to be able to easily order multiple samples and quickly scan through a lot of options.

process
As part of my process, I analyzed a lot of data on current use, best practices, and competitors. I also did a number of iterations and aligned with the team on what their needs were. Finally, I also refreshed the branding and gave the site a fresh new look and feel.
final design
typography
For the typeface, I chose Montserrat, because it is clean and legible. It also has enough sophistication that I thought fit the brand of The Perfect Rug.
colors
Purple was already part of the existing branding. I doubled down on it and made it a central pillar of the color palette. It is a color that feels novel and sophisticated, which I thought was a good fit for a custom rug brand.
refreshed landing page
I redesigned the landing page, with the goal of simplifying the message and improving navigation. The result was a much cleaner design that lets people quickly understand the value of the brand, as well as quickly jump into exploring rugs.
Streamlined checkout
In order to reduce the friction of buyers, I simplified the checkout process and introduced more clarity into the steps. This was a key aspect of the design, aimed at improving successful checkouts.
simplified rug discovery
Simplifying search and discovery was another big priority for the design. By combining all variations of a rug in a single posting, we were better able to showcase the variety of rugs available. We also improved the search and filter functionality, for quicker discovery.
MOBILE first redesign
The new design was mobile-first, as that was an important goal we had. Since many of the users were accessing the site from a mobile device, we wanted to make sure that those users have a much-improved experience. The previous site was not optimized for mobile devices, which was a concern, give the large mobile traffic that the site had.
easy rug customization
The existing rug customization process was complicated and forced users to go through multiple steps. The new design greatly simplified the process and thus reduced the friction that one have when customizing a rug.
